< BIODATA PERFORMANCE >

PRODUCING PERFORMANCE:

I had origninally made this track in FLStudio. FL Studio is not suited to live performance so I started off by exporting all the stems that I had made.

The song also has an arp in it, which I decided to add in using MIDI instead of exporting the stem, I did this so I could manipulate it live during the performance.

MIDI for arppegiator

I used a patch that I had made for a project in year 1, I filtered the cuttoff very low in the intro. I used this patch for both the main lead at the arp. Filtering the cuttoff, and lowering the release and decay made a much more 'plucky' sound which suited the arpeggio much more.

To create the track,  I hooked the bio synth up to my plant and let it run for 5-10 mins. I found that this was the most effective way to get 'listenable' MIDI data from it. Depending on where you touched the plant, the signals would come through more frequently. This is because the electronic signals within people are much stronger then the ones inside plants.

Here is an example of this:

CREATING THE TRACK:

Then, with all this MIDI randomness, I sorted through the notes, deleting a few in order to make a melody. I left the notes unquantized, as I thought this would ruin my overall goal in creating generative stochastic music.

FINAL PERFORMANCE:
MIDI MAPPING:

Triggers all stems at the same time to play

Linked to bass volume, so I can fade the bass in and out without it sounding harsh

Controlls arp cutoff, I use this at the end of the track to make it build.

Linked to second lead volume

SETTING UP FOR INTERACTION:
REHERSALS:

Main lead reverb control, only used towards the end for a trail off

I had a MIDI channel with a Serum chime serum patch on, I then had the biofeedback machine and AKAI MPK connected to my computer via USB hub. This allowed me to swtich from performing to the interaction part of the performance seemlessly.

To rehearse the performance, I just ran through it several times until I knew how I wanted it to sound. I had to make sure that the parameters on the AKAI were set at the right place before starting. Otherwise, for example if the knob controlling the cutoff was set to the max when I started, it would be very loud and startle people.

I also had another parameter controlling the reverb of the main lead, this couldn't be used too much as I noticed the reverb caused the song to sound muddy and phased slightly. Here is a rehearsal video:
